New Video: The Haunted Resturant of Corner Brook

Hello everyone,

Our new video on the haunted restaurant of the Valley Mall is now up! I'd been thinking of heading back out to the west coast, since it's been a while since we've done a video on that part of the island, and I got a tip that there's a haunted restaurant in one of the mall's out there that sounded worth checking out. Highly recommend for those of you in the area.

Serial killer via pickling?

Hello everyone,

I've heard an odd story recently and wanted to see what you all thought about it. Apparently back in the late 1800s here, there was a serial killer who used improperly sealed canned goods to kill people. I was sure it must have been a superstition, but I've found a few news reports from the time covering it now, so it seems like it's real. Hannah Leyton was a popular maker of jams and relishes in the community of Grand Bank - but it seems that she felt wronged by a few of her neighbours, in particular miss Hepzibah Power who rumor has it was married to Leyton's childhood sweetheart. So, one day Leyton noticed the seal had lifted on one of her cans, meaning the relish inside was likely unsafe to eat, and she had an idea for a little trick she could play on Power. She resealed the can and gifted it to Hepzibah with the usual assortment of jams she distributed around holiday times - only the unsealed jar had developed enough dangerous bacteria to drive Power to an early grave after consuming it. What's worse, her husband, Leyton's sweetheart, died of illness as well.

Poorly sealed canned goods are no good - they can be a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria, including the botulism bacteria that's one of the most toxic substances on earth.

The death was viewed as an accident and couldn't be traced back to Leyton - who herself couldn't be sure that she was responsible - but she suspected, and so struck again a few months later, this time on an unsuspecting customer.

She spaced out the timing and the methods of her poisonings enough that for a long time law enforcement so no connection between the deaths. It wasn't until she died herself that her son uncovered her notes and began to piece together what happened. What a sinister idea...

Early Experiences:

Over the years I've had a few people ask me how I got into the supernatural, and with my book coming out soon, Stay Sharpe: Untold Tales of Outport Newfoundland, I thought I'd finally end some of the suspense.

Growing up, I was an avid fan of ghost stories. If a classmate had a tale to tell involving ghosts, demons or witches, I would be among the first asking to hear it, waiting with baited breath for the moment when the horror would reveal itself. But it was more of an interest in horror stories, sated just as easily by grisly comic book or record cover. Though I enjoyed supposedly true encounter stories, I held my reservations, as had been the way in my family for generations. My family was from out around the bay in the greater Lewisporte areas, and strictly Anglican, and so while I heard the odd story about someone seeing something odd from their boat in the middle of the night, or feeling the presence of a deceased loved one, most ideas of fairies and demons were dismissed as absurd, and worse - Catholic!

All in all, I was content as a skeptic, accepting whatever distinctions between fact and fiction were laid out to me by a more informed adult. That is, until one night, I believe in the summer of 1986, when we went camping in Gros Morne.

I was 12 years old, and not pleased to be stuck spending a week exposed to the elements and the flies. Usually when we camped, our first day would be spent on the drive out, with a short period before sunset to get set up and eat, and then we would have a fire and go to bed, to begin hiking and visting beaches early in the morning. I don't remember precisely now whether it was the night we set up or our second night at the site, but I do remember that the sun had sunk out of sight a few hours earlier, and my brother had disappeared into the night to go hang out at our cousins' camp site, since they were closer in age and interests. My parents lit the fire and I sat with them while they chatted with my aunt about school and work and politics, which I found mind-numbingly boring, and so I elected to return my focus to my comic book - something with superheroes fighting vibrantly colored demons. I was so engrossed in my reading that I didn't notice the quiet until I finished my comic.

I looked around and realized I was alone. My parents had departed with my aunt at some point, leaving me alone at the fire. Immediately I felt uneasy. The woods were dark and looming, and it seemed as though the entire campground had gone quiet. That was when I saw it - a light. It floated high above my head, above any human height, and moved perfectly steadily through the trees. I guess I was quiet and it didn't see me, because it never paused or stuttered - just smoothly floated out of sight. I wish I had stood up, followed it to see where it went and what it wanted, but in the moment I froze, trying to understand what I had just seen. This was before drones or iphones - this was a machine, able to suspend intself above ground and to move silently, perfectly balanced. I knew I had seen something not of this world. I told my brother and cousins, even though I knew I'd be mocked - and I was right - but when it got late the next night, he stayed out with me, scanning the trees for signs of alien life.

I've never seen anything like it again, but I am certain that what I saw was a U.F.O. controlled by something not of this planet.

It was not to be my last experience of the supernatural, but was the most impactful, and set me on a path to find the truth for myself, instead of letting everyone around me tell me what was or wasn't true. New Video: July 20th, 1969 - The UFO of Bishop's Falls

Hello everyone,

This week's video is on another UFO sighting that you may not have heard of. I found it while scrolling through the national UFO database for new video ideas and thought it would be a perfect fit. 1969 was a big year for UFO's across the province - I could probably do a video just on sightings within that one year.

Update on Bigfoot:

Due to a flood of recent requests, I have made the decision to include Bigfoot in the history section of the website. I remain skeptical of his presence - but a friend of mine pointed out, "Archie, you believe in ghosts and alien spaceships showing up in Downtown St. John's, even when everyone in the world is telling you you're crazy. Bigfoot is where you draw the line?"

I created this site, not just to follow my own whims on the subject, but to try create a space that could be useful for everyone with an interest in understanding the supernatural here, and as the leader of this initiative, I must recognize my own biases at times and learn to work through them.

Therefore, I have decided to accept the reported sightings, however unlikely they may initially sound, out of respect for those of you who have stuck with this project from the start.

New Upload Schedule

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! My first video of 2023 will be out in a couple weeks, but first I wanted to let you know that I'm going to be moving to a more regular posting schedule. The plan is to release videos on the last day of each month, and to stick to doing one every month. We'll see how I do.
