Was passing through the cemetery up the hill from Quidi Vidi the other day on the way to the store and saw this older woman standing at one of the graves, crying. She was wearing a black dress and facing away from me. I figured I'd give her some privacy so I tried to be quiet and not acknowledge her, kept walking down the hill - but when I came back up, must have been an hour later, she was still there. I'm certain it was the same person - same weird old black dress, standing in the same spot. I was admittedly a little curious, most people stay for a bit, pay their respects, leave the flowers - you don't want to leave to quickly, that would feel disrespectful, but usually they don't stick around that long. Or, if they do, they at least sit down and make themselves comfortable. I don't think my knees could handle standing for an hour.
My house looks out on the cemetery, so I end up people watching on occasion. It's just a bit of harmless curiosity. But without the security of the glass, I guess I wasn't as stealthy as I could have been, must have made some sort of noise, because she whipped around to face me - that was when I saw that she had no face. She'd been standing at this really old grave that you can't read the writing on, and her face was just a gory blob with two bulging eyes. She stumbled towards me and let out this banshee wail and I booked it out of there. I haven't been that scared since I was a little kid. Haven't been back in the cemetery since, I've started taking the long way down to the lake, and I've kept my curtains drawn. The people watching was fun, but now I can't help but wonder what might end up looking back at me if I try again. I seriously advise people stay out of that place.
